Circular Economy Strategy Germany

The National Circular Economy Strategy (NCES), adopted by the Federal Cabinet in December 2024, represents a milestone on Germany’s transformative journey toward a circular economy. It is guided by the principle of preserving the value of raw materials and products for as long as possible, using materials efficiently, and keeping them in circulation as long as feasible. This approach ultimately bolsters the resilience and innovative capacity of Germany as an industrial hub.

The extraction of raw materials incurs significant costs—for the environment, society, and the economy. An economic model that increasingly depends on new (primary) raw materials is neither economically, ecologically, nor socially sustainable in the long run. Transitioning to a circular economy is therefore essential to achieving our climate and environmental policy goals, while also unlocking substantial economic opportunities.
